The only way to ensure that DLCs guarantee that the community is responsible, safe, and ethical, is to make sure all people involved are knowledgeable to how to create such an environment. Students must be taught how to make sure they follow all the laws about copyrights and fair use as well as be held accountable by the teachers and fellow students for making sure that they are following said rules. Teachers should begin every course making sure students know what Fair Use is and how Creative Commons Copyrights can be used in their work. Teachers should also allow the class to create norms and acceptable use policies. Doing so, the class can really take the time to analyze what should be done and shouldn't be done online. Also, teachers should establish the consequences of not following said rules and ensure that they are being enforced strictly.
The best way to ensure that
students follow and understand the benefits of Digital Rights and
Responsibilities is to create an orientation class that is required for
students to participate in, then after they must get a 95 or higher on the
assessment. Once that is completed, they must sign an AUP that will link their responsibility
to their grade and ability to continue the course.
