Communicate 2 - Synchronous Sessions

I.        Introduction             
a.       The teacher will begin with putting a Warm up on the screen called “Sponge”.
                                                   i.      Review:
1.       83 less than a number n
2.       2 less than the product of 7 and a number m
3.        Half of x
                                                 ii.      What are the Order of Operations? What do you know about them?
II.      Body 15-20mins
a.        Students will enter notes from the session in their math composition books.
                                                   i.      Slide two: Evaluate  7 + 4 • 3.
1.       Is your answer 33 or 19?
2.       You can get 2 different answers depending on which operation you did first.  We want everyone to get the same answer so we must follow the order of operations.
                                                 ii.      Slide three: Remember the phrase
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS.
1.       ORDER OF OPERATIONS
2.       1.  Parentheses - ( )  or [ ]
3.       2.  Exponents or Powers
4.       3.  Multiply and Divide (from left to right)
5.       4.  Add and Subtract (from left to right)
                                               iii.      Slide four through seven include examples
1.       7 + 4 · 3
2.       3(3 + 7) 2 ÷ 5
3.       20 - 3 • 6 + 102 + (6 + 1) • 4

b.       During the session, students will have the opportunity to interact with the presentation through solving problems online.
                                                   i.      Slides eight through ten
1.       112 + 18 - 33 · 5 Answer: 4
2.       16 - 2(10 - 3) Answer:2
3.       24 – 6 · 4 ÷ 2 Answer: 12
c.        Students will continue to  enter notes from the session in their math composition books.
                                                   i.      Slide 11:
1.       Evaluating a Variable Expression To evaluate a variable expression    
a.        Substitute the given numbers for each variable.
b.       Use order of operations to solve.
                                                 ii.      Slide 12 through 13 include examples
1.       n + (13 - n) ¸ 5       for  n = 8
2.       8y - 3x2 + 2n     for x = 5, y = 2, n =3
d.       During the session, students will have the opportunity to interact with the presentation through solving problems online.
                                                   i.      Slides 14-16
1.       10 – 4x  if  x = -13? Answer 42
2.       5k3 if k = -4? Answer -320
3.        if n = -8, m = 4, and t = 2 ? Answer -6

e.        Provide continuous feedback – are they getting it?
                                                   i.      The teacher will give practice problems throughout the lesson.
                                                 ii.      If students are having trouble with problems, teacher will go over material again and reteach.

III.    Conclusion

a.        Students should summarize the lesson
                                                   i.      The class as a whole will review the questions and ask questions if there are any.
                                                 ii.      Class worksheet will be sent out and students will work on the problems.
b.       Review

                                                   i.      Teacher will review main aspects of the lesson quickly and ask if there are any questions.
IV>      Assessment
a.        Students will  complete questions online and send them to the teacher for review.
